How to Weigh Luggage Without A Scale
It is important that you weigh your suitcase before leaving home so you can save yourself some hassle. I can still remember the last time I was headed for a summer holiday, overconfident that my luggage is just below 7 kg., only to find out that it was not. Can you imagine that I had to pay an extra $20 for this simple mistake?
I promised not to let this one get me again for my next trip. However, after I’ve done packing my things, I searched the house and to my horror, there are no luggage scales available. How to weigh a luggage without a scale?
Fortunately, I found some wise ways to do so. If you want to know, then please keep on reading below.
How Can You Weigh Your Luggage Without A Scale
1. Buy one!
Here’s an obvious answer: go to the store and buy one! You can find one that is very handy. It's a practical hook which you can just pop your luggage on, pick it up and it will tell you how much your luggage weighs. This is the best way so you will never go to the airport with an overweight luggage ever. Don’t worry, they are really cheap and you can find them almost everywhere like most big supermarkets.
But I understand that it can sometimes be not this easy. Maybe it’s already the middle of the night, your flight is early in the morning and your still last minute packing; there’s no way you can get your hands on a luggage weighing scale. Don’t worry I still have more options below!
2. Use a normal human weighing scale.
Who doesn’t monitor his weight? If you are health conscious as I am, I’m pretty sure you’ve got a normal human weighing scale. This is a commonly used hack that is pretty much effective. Here’s how you can do it:
Stand on the scale and weigh yourself. Record your measurement.
Then this time, carry your suitcase and stand on the scale. Weigh yourself and record the measurement again.
Now, subtract the first number to the second number you get. This is now the weight of your luggage.
Easy peasy, right? But what if you are very unfortunate that you still don’t own a weighing scale? Well, we might be in trouble and it might not be so simple to get around this problem.
But I will be sharing with you some methods I’ve tried before, but I have to warn you, they can be pretty tedious. But still, it can give you quick solutions and an ideal to how much your luggage weighs.
3. Do-it-yourself lever-and-fulcrum weight measuring device
Though, strictly speaking, there is no way to measure your luggage’s weight without a scale, so we have to make one. You can quickly assemble the most simple lever-and-fulcrum weight device by using readily available household objects.
I believe this technique can be an alternative for a professional scale for a rough weight measurement. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Collect some objects which weights are known to you; for instance, your hand weights. You can also look in your kitchen if you can find packages of dry food that has weight measurements printed on their contents. Another thing you can use are containers of water; remember that a gallon of water weighs 3.79 kg or 8.35 pounds.
Step 2: Now you need to make a fulcrum where your plank can sit up. This should be something round like a bottle or a round-bottomed bowl as long as it is strong enough to hold the weight of your plank, as well as the luggage you are trying to measure and the weight of the object you will be comparing with. The fulcrum should also be high enough to give the plank full clearance of the floor.
Step 3: Then find something you can use as measuring pans and both should also be identical. You can use two big aluminum pie tins for this as long as it is wide enough to hold your luggage. Place one measuring pan on each end of the plank, secure it properly so it will not move during the measurement.
Step 4: Now that you have attached the measuring pans to the plank, balance the plank on the fulcrum. Try your best to place the plan evenly with the fulcrum at the middle or at least try to set the plank with both sides hovering an equal height above the floor.
Step 5: This time you might need a help from your friend. As you place your luggage in one measuring pan, let your friend take care of the other end so the plank will not slide along the fulcrum. Take note that the end you've placed your luggage on will sink to the ground; there should be a balance from the other side.
Step 6: Now add the objects with weights known to you on the opposite end of the plank; do it one at a time. The smaller the increments of the weight you have, the more you will get an accurate result. When the plank will start to hover evenly again, this means you have gained the equilibrium and you can start to assess if your luggage is equal to the weight of the known objects you’ve added.
Figuring out what you should pack for your upcoming trip is without a doubt stressful. And once you are done squeezing everything into your suitcase, you still have to make sure that it is within the airline’s weight limit.
So at least try to learn how you can weigh your luggage without a scale, you’ll never know when you’re going to need to determine your luggage's weight. Worse comes to worst, there are now machines you can find at the airport that can weigh your luggage but this comes with a small fee.
